Crown will be expected to clean up its board – following the recommendations made in Commissioner Bergin’s report – in a bid to receive its casino licence. Commissioner Bergin’s report said CEO Ken Barton was found to have demonstrated he was no match for what was needed as the head of a casino licensee. One of the major recommendations handed down in the report was major shareholders will only be permitted to hold 10 per cent of stock – in a similar arrangement to Crown’s major Sydney competitor Star Entertainment. It included a caveat, however, for major shareholder James Packer - who owns about 37 per cent - saying he could either sell down his shares to fit within the 10 per cent or apply to the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority for an exemption.
