Después del inesperado doblete en las 24 h. de Le Mans se inscribieron cuatro automóviles en la prueba de sport que se organizaba en el circuito de Nurburgring para celebrar su 50 aniversario. Para participar en esta prueba tomaron la drástica decisión de convertirlos en Spyder con el claro objetivo de disminuir el area frontal y los 100 Kgs de peso que se ganaban con la operación. La carrera no tuvo demasiadas complicaciones para los pilotos de Mercedes en cuanto a competencia (ya que las grandes compañías como Jaguar, Ferrari o Alfa no acudieron al evento) pero sí sirvió para demostrar la rapidez y fiabilidad de los coches alemanes, consiguiendo las cuatro primeras posiciones. El vencedor fue Hermann Lang con el dorsal nº 21 y los triangulos de las aletas delanteras en color azul, versión que estáis viendo.
