"We have so many seniors across the county that are literally choosing between paying their property taxes and going to the grocery store," Burroughs added. "I got a call from a senior citizen last year who is 99 years old, who cannot afford to pay her property taxes, and that’s the last thing that we want our seniors worried about." The program is funded by the MGM National Harbor Local Impact Grant, which was established when the casino was built to ensure residents living around it directly benefit from casino revenue. "It’s important to be able to use the money that is rightfully ours to benefit the community," said Sharon Lawrence, who is participating in the program.
